The challenge
Karl Belisle had built a successful real estate photography business in the Ottawa-Gatineau market, but his growth was hitting a ceiling. The booking process was manual (emails and phone calls), the website was a basic template that didn't reflect the quality of the work, and there was no systematic approach to acquiring new clients beyond word-of-mouth.
He came to us with a clear goal: build a digital presence and systems that could scale the business from hundreds of properties a year to thousands — without proportionally scaling the administrative workload.
Our approach
This wasn't a website project. It was a business systems project that happened to include a website. We scoped the engagement across three workstreams running in parallel:
- Brand identity — position Parsell as a premium, tech-forward alternative in a market full of solo photographers with template websites
- Platform build — custom booking system, property listing management, client portal, and agent dashboard
- Growth engine — SEO foundation, local search optimization, and paid media campaigns to fill the pipeline
Brand identity
The name "Parsell" already existed, but it had no visual identity beyond a basic wordmark. We built a complete brand system: logo, color palette, typography, photography direction, and brand guidelines.
The positioning strategy centered on speed and reliability — the two things real estate agents care about most. Every visual and verbal decision reinforced this: sharp angles, clean layouts, and copy that was direct and confident rather than flowery.
"Blackburn didn't just give us a logo — they gave us an identity that our agents actually want to be associated with. That's the difference."
The platform
The core of the project was a custom-built booking and management platform. Agents can book a shoot in under 15 seconds, see their listing status in real time, and download assets directly from a branded portal.
On the backend, Karl's team gets automated scheduling, photographer assignment, delivery tracking, and invoicing — replacing what used to be 4+ hours of daily admin work.
Technical stack
- Custom frontend with responsive booking flow
- Node.js / Express backend with real-time availability
- Automated email sequences for booking confirmation, reminders, and delivery
- Client portal with asset management and direct download
- Admin dashboard with analytics and reporting
SEO & paid media
With the platform live, we turned to filling it with clients. The SEO strategy focused on local search domination — targeting "real estate photography" + every city and neighborhood in the Ottawa-Gatineau metro area.
Paid media ran across Google Search and Meta, targeting real estate agents specifically. We built custom audiences based on engagement signals and ran conversion-optimized campaigns pointing to dedicated landing pages.
Results
Within six months of launch:
- Organic search traffic grew 280% — now the #1 result for "real estate photography Ottawa" and 12 related terms
- Paid campaigns delivered a consistent 4.2x ROAS with a cost-per-booking under $18
- Average booking time dropped from "send an email and wait" to 12 seconds
- Administrative workload reduced by an estimated 60%, freeing the team to focus on production
Parsell is now photographing over 3,000 properties a year and expanding into virtual staging and drone services — all running through the platform we built.
